Our Story
Before running Geese Energy, Joe gained extensive experience as a restorer of buildings - homes mainly but also farm buildings - and as a renewable energy scheme designer. Joe has deep knowledge of solar, battery, & heat pump schemes, is a qualified building energy surveyor and retrofit assessor. Joe is qualified to work on Listed Buildings and older buildings in general. Making buildings perform better is a passion and a mission.
When not at work Joe will often be fixing boats at Bucklers Hard or Keyhaven, often for himself. Other times he'll be rigging up off-grid systems for others, rowing on the coast, cycling with or without the Geese Energy cargo trailer....much easier without, or continuing the gradual deep retrofit process of making the current family home more energy efficient - never enough time or money to do it all in one go.
Joe allocates some of his working time to providing some completely unbilled or heavily discounted hours for charities and to not-for-profits. There is a little waiting list for that as we have to do enough paid work to keep afloat. But by all means ask and if we can help we will.
Typical private rates are £50 an hour for small jobs, 1/2 days £150, day rate £250 - though we do all we can to keep the total down. We will never surprise you with a bigger bill than you expect. Lodgement fees for Energy Certificates, Building Conrol and DNO's are passed on at cost. If all you want is an EPC Certificate with no further thinking, we can do that, but we usually like to do more than that for our clients. If you want to dig a bit deeper into what your options really are and why, before you invite specialists to quote, or role your sleeves to project manage a better future yourself, we can get into that with you in as much depth, or as precisely as you need us to.
We also have plenty of experience of the planning system, from the preparation of individual planning applications, through to Environmental Impact Assessment and National Planning Policy. Also able to handle applications (DNO) to connect renewable generation and batteries to the grid.
If you want to see if some Energy Survey and Retrofit Advice from Geese Energy is right for you, the first conversation is free and without obligation. Rates by agreement.
Architects and new builders watch this space. Geese Energy will be offering a range of further services for you very soon as soon as Joe passes his final exams allowing him to model building performance from architect's plans.
Most of our work is in the New Forest, Hampshire and Dorset. But we have also worked as far afield as the Lake District.

BLOG
January 2026 - Fit for the Future
Almost every week we get to share in some sort of wonderful news here at Geese. Earlier this week clients who have worked hard to improve the energy efficiency of their home gave us the green light to formally re-run the SAP (EPC) score on their property. It used to be an EPC C. Not too bad. We formally submit our rescore result today. We expect to face a formal audit on this one. We say it’s now an A! Be great news if the auditor agrees. Hats off to these clients and to the huge numbers of other property owners taking their homes on the same upward journey, as part of improving UK housing for themselves and of course for whoever buys, rents or inherits that precious living space next.
December 2025 - MVHR rollout
Delighted to have ended 2025 almost at the end of the process to be registered to service and repair Mechanical Ventilation and Heat Recovery (MVHR) systems. As an industry we have been very fast to sell and install stuff and perhaps slower to engage with the gritty task of making sure that what we fitted is snag free and delivers the promised benefits years into the future. We very much hope to be doing our own share of that ongoing assurance work for clients from early in February 2026. By all means contact us to discuss, book us now for March 2026 onwards to do the servicing work over and above the 3 to 6 monthly filter changes that you should be doing yourself. That wider servicing is needed once every 1 to 3 years depending on the unit and site. Subject to your location we can do your filter changes too if you prefer. MVHR is marvellous…. comfort changing, energy bill changing, indoor air quality revolutionising. The best ventilation you can have in a home is MVHR. Loving the change in our own house since we fitted it. If you have MVHR you probably have a pretty airtight home. The MVHR needs to work properly or you will stew. With correct installation, especially the planning & fitting of the ducting, and with proper servicing and diarised filter changes MVHR will work marvellously and there is little likely to go wrong. Without proper servicing, eventually it won’t work. Not everyone can afford wonderful MVHR and not everyone has a home that is ready for it. Talk to us about your ventilation and let us help you map the right path - it won't always be MVHR - there are other solutions that will be better for many buildings. Humans thrive best at 21 degrees C and 55% relative humidity. Lovely MVHR gives us that. Wonderful.
November 2025 - Property Puzzles
In one of a client's Victorian properties in London, a constantly damp downstairs had been plaguing the occupant. Some simple changes to the rainwater run-off management and some insulation adjustment were key. We brought in a surveyor (RICS) alongside to underwrite the change of direction on this one.
A client who wanted solar PV but couldn't see how it could be done is now confidently getting quotes from trusted installers - no kick backs for us - we are independent and the only fees we take are fair fees for our advice - though we do pride ourselves on aiming to get clients a level of value for money that more than covers the cost of using us.
Not all work.........We just sailed our big old boat over the bar into Keyhaven and put her on a floating buoy awaiting a lift out. Think we need to take the gearbox off one of the old BMC engines and get to that rear crank seal this winter. The new Zehnder mechanical ventilation and heat recovery system (MVHR) system is up and running in our own house - the bathrooms are dry and we are all revelling in a living space where we can now sit anywhere in the house and be comfortable..
